MEET THE ICE SCULPTING ARTISTS
Four Ice Sculptors from across the US will convene in Houston to compete for the Houston Ice Festival People's Choice Award. Artists will use chainsaws, chisels and blow torches to transform icy blocks into artful masterpieces. They will have four hours to create an ice sculpture related to the "Tour Around the World" theme. Enjoy the fun of watching each artist bring their vision to life.
Rolando De La Garza, aka Reverend Butter is a native Houstonian who grew up on the outskirts of Fifth Ward, He has been practicing ice sculpting since 1998. He is a proud Texan and father of 3 boys. He is one of four members of Team Texas, who won 2nd place for their Vahallah at the 2019 Ice Alaska world wide competition. He often says ice sculpting is a growing business but a dying art and is proud to be part of the 8% of ice carvers who still practice this traditional hand artistry compared to the majority who have given in to technology. He created E8GHT Percent Ice Sculpting, a local nonprofit to promote and preserve the art of hand ice sculpting by educating the public and increasing awareness through community programming and by providing education and training to future generations of ice sculptors.
Buddy "Burr" Rassmussen was born in California to a creatively gifted family. He attended culinary art school in Austin, Texas and started learning to ice sculpt. His love for the art flourished and has continued over 25 years. He takes pride knowing that he is one of the few 8%ers and carves all of his pieces by hand. Most of the carvers have turned to CNC machines. His work has won years of awards, recognition and repeat business. Buddy enjoys travel and has participated in world-wide events such as the London Ice Festival & BP Ice Art World Championships. Burr currently resides in San Antonio. In 2016, he won 3rd place and in 2015 2nd place at the BP World Ice Art Competition in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Don Lowing is a visual artist based in Philadelphia. specializing in Sculpture, Digital Works, and Motion Graphics.He is an award winning Ice Sculptor and has been sculpting ice for over 23 years and has created over 35,000 sculptures. Ice sculpting has been a unique journey which has given him the chance to travel, create the most challenging designs, and work with the greatest sculptors in the world. He has competed in Yellow Knife, Canada; Lake Louise, Canada; Poznan, Poland; and twice at the World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska 2005 and 2007. In 2019, he and his team won 3rd place in the Multi-Block category at the World Ice Art Competition in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Thomas J. Neary, “TJ” has been creating ice sculptures in the heart of N.Y.C. and the tri-state area for over 30 years. He graduated from The Culinary Institute of America in 1987 and is the owner and lead sculptor for Touch of Ice. He has competed in ice sculpting competitions across the US. In 2019, he and his team won 5th place Online Peoples Choice Award in the Multi-Block category at the World Ice Art Competition in Fairbanks,
